Green factories now 229 as three more RMG units obtain LEED certification

Three more garment factories in Bangladesh have received the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC), raising the total number of green factories in the country to 229.
The country has boasted the figure with 91 platinum and 124 gold-rated factories. Now, Bangladesh has 61 out of the top 100 highest-rated Leed-certified factories in the world, According to the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA).
The apex trade body of the country also informed that Ananta Huaxiang Limited in Narayanganj scored 63 and obtained ‘Gold’ Certification while Sepal Garments Ltd in Gazipur, Bangladesh, scored 85 and achieved ‘Platinum’ Certification level and Unitex Spinning Ltd, Unit-2 in Sitakunda of Chattogram, secured score 83, and obtained ‘Platinum’ Certification level.
“Despite the headwinds of a global economic downturn and domestic challenges, Bangladesh’s RMG industry remains steadfast in its pursuit of sustainable growth. Our achievement of numerous LEED certifications underscores our proactive stance on environmental sustainability and reinforces our position as a trusted sourcing partner. Sustainability has always been a cornerstone of our operations, ensuring that our growth aligns with international best practices and environmental stewardship,” BGMEA Director Mohiuddin Rubel said.
He added that Bangladesh’s progress in green growth is a significant step toward achieving net zero carbon emission. This achievement is a testament to the collaborative efforts of buyers, the government, and development organizations. Their support has been instrumental in driving the industry forward, enabling us to maintain our competitive edge while setting new benchmarks in sustainability.
“With continued partnership and dedication, we are confident that the Bangladesh RMG industry will reach new heights of excellence, further cementing its position as a global leader in sustainable and ethical manufacturing,” he also added.
Mohiuddin also said, “We are excited to build upon this momentum and continue our journey toward creating a more sustainable and environmentally responsible industry.”
In 2023, the country’s RMG export worldwide reached $47.39 billion, with 3.67% growth compared to 2022.
