Ex-food minister Sadhan Chandra remanded over murder

A Dhaka court on Friday placed on remand Sadhan Chandra Majumder, a former lawmaker from Naogaon and the erstwhile food minister, in the case of shooting dead Daffodil International University student Ramiz Uddin Rup during the anti-discrimination student movement.

Earlier on the day, Badda police station Sub-Inspector Syed Imrul Saheed had applied for remanding the former Awami League minister for 10 days. After the hearing, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Saifuddin Hossain granted a seven-day remand.

A team of detective branch of police arrested Sadhan Chandra Majumder from the capital's Bashundhara residential area on 3 October.

According to the case statement, Rup, 21, was shot dead in Karwan Bazar area on 4 August as he was taking part in the anti-discrimination student movement.

He was a student of computer science department at Daffodil International University.

Later, Rup's father AKM Rokibul Ahmed filed a murder case in this regard with Tejgaon Police Station against 223 individuals, including ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
