Health Adviser Nurjahan Begum on Monday said 23,000 people were injured in July-August due to attacks by forces backed by the Awami League government, and 22 of these have lost at least one limb.

The death toll in the mass uprising rose to 737 by Monday morning, she said adding the toll would keep rising as more were succumbing to their injuries while undergoing treatment.

By Monday evening, the official tally rose to 742, as per the list published on the website of Health Security Division.

Furthermore, 400 people suffered injuries to the eyes with 45 losing sight in both eyes and 350 losing one eye, Nurjahan said while addressing reporters at the Bangladesh Secretariat.

Chinese and French ophthalmologists have reached the country to treat the eye injuries, and have already attended to 200 patients. They have operated on three eye patients.

As Chinese physicians are not well-known for providing orthopedic treatment, the required doctors will come from France and UK, the health adviser informed reporters.

One patient would be sent to Russia and Australia for undergoing plastic surgery, which would cost around Tk4 crore, she said.
