A Dhaka court has sent former mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation Atiqul Islam to jail in connection with three incidents of murders in the city’s Mohammadpur area.
As he was hauled up in court, defense lawyer Morshed Hossain Shaheen applied for his bail, while public prosecutor of Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court Omar Faruk Faruki opposed the prayer. After hearing both sides, Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ali Haider's court denied his bail and ordered him to be sent to jail. On Wednesday night, Mohammadpur police arrested him in the capital’s Mohakhali.
During the Anti-discrimination Student Movement on 19 July, Rakib Hasan, a seventh-grader at Mohammadpur's ITZ School and College, autorickshaw driver Roni and a young man named Al Shahriar Hossain died of gunshot wounds.
Later on 22 September, Rakib's uncle Md Nurul Amin filed the case while Roni's mother Parveen lodged the case on 8 September and Hossain’s father Monir Hossain filed the case on 3 September at Mohammadpur Police Station.
