Vehicular movement resumed on Nabinagar-Chandra highway in Bypile area of Dhaka after 32 hours on Tuesday evening as law enforcers chased away garment workers enforcing a blockade there demanding payment of their dues and reopening of their factories.

No one was injured in the police action, even as the agitated workers vandalised some 50 vehicles.

Witnesses said the workers of Generation Next Limited factory took to the streets around 10am Monday at Bypile intersection, halting vehicular movement.

Around 5pm Tuesday, a team of law enforcing agencies asked them to leave the spot, assuring the agitators of fulfilling their demands.

But they did not pay any heed to the request and stayed there.

At one stage, police chased them to disperse, forcing the workers to go away from the street.

Sarwar Alam, an official of Industrial Police-1, said the workers have been driven away and vehicular movement was normal.

Some workers told reporters that the authorities of Generation Next Limited closed the factory for an indefinite period without clearing employees’ dues.

The owners of the factory gave assurances several times to pay the salaries, but no initiative had been taken.

Additional police have been deployed to avert further trouble.
