From today, eggs will be sold at fair prices at 13 locations across the capital.
The Directorate of National Consumers’ Right Protection will supply eggs directly from producers, via dealers, to consumers, said Mohammad Alim Akhtar Khan, director general of the Directorate of Consumer Rights Protection, on Saturday during a shadow parliament discussion at the Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (BFDC).
The discussion was held under the theme “Market instability caused by syndicates formed by the previous government.”
Alim said, “The sale of eggs will commence directly from producers to consumers at seven locations within the Dhaka South City Corporation and six locations within the Dhaka North City Corporation from Sunday onwards.”
He expressed optimism that this initiative would allow consumers to purchase eggs at fair prices, while also helping to stabilise the market during the upcoming Ramadan.
The director general emphasised the need for good governance to dismantle market syndicates effectively.
The designated locations include Tejgaon Market, Mirpur-1, Mirpur-10, Mohammadpur Krishi Market, Sadeq Khan Krishi Market (Mohammadpur), and Uttara-10 (Khamarpara Road) in Dhaka North; and Kaptanbazar, New Market, Khilgaon, Jorain, Konapara Sarulia, Shonir Akhra, and Chittagong Road in Dhaka South.
A total of two million eggs will be supplied daily from producers through agents or dealers for consumers. The two city corporations will oversee the overall management of this initiative.
Among these locations, Tejgaon market and Kaptanbazar will each receive 650,000 eggs, while the remaining 11 markets will receive 700,000 eggs in proportionate distribution for sale.
At present, a dozen layer chicken eggs are priced at Tk150, duck eggs at Tk240, Paragon brown eggs at Tk205, and deshi (local) chicken eggs at Tk240.
