Limon Hossain on Tuesday filed a complaint with the International Crime Tribunal (ICT) against nine security officials from Sheikh Hasina’s regime for being complicit in torturing him under RAB custody in March 2011.

Limon was only 16 at the time of the heinous crime, which cost him his left leg and drew public attention.

The accused include Maj Gen (retd) Tariq Ahmed Siddiqui, former premier Sheikh Hasina’s security adviser; Ziaul Ahsan, former chief of National Telecommunication Monitoring Center (NTMC); and RAB-8 former camp commander Major Rashed.

Limon could not file a case against the aforementioned three due to political pressure and security risks he faced during the Awami League regime, he told reporters after filing the complaint on ICT premises on Tuesday.

He even could not live in his ancestral village for 8-10 years fearing state-backed violence.

Now with the interim government in power, he is once again hoping to get justice, Limon told reporters.

He also branded RAB as a “terrorist organisation”, and demanded the elite force be disbanded.

On 23 March 2011, at Rajapur upazila of Jhalkathi, RAB personnel fired on him when he was herding cattle. The force took him under their custody, where they shot at his left leg.

Upon release, he sought treatment at the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR), also known as Pangu Hospital, where the doctors had to amputate his left leg below the knee.

However, on Tuesday, he alleged then Home Minister Sahara Khatun prevented him from continuing treatment at NITOR, forcing him to complete treatment at the Gonoshasthaya Nagar Hospital in Dhanmondi in the capital.

Days before the torture, he was preparing to sit for HSC exams, but the prospects faded for the year.

While still undergoing treatment, he sat for the public exams next year and aced it securing GPA 4 out of 5.

He enrolled into the law department of Gono Bishwabidyalay, and now is a teacher at the university.

Notably, Gonoshasthaya supported his medical treatment and graduate studies.

RAB filed two cases against him on charge of “terrorism,” but he was acquitted in both on orders from the home ministry.

However, Limon was kept on his toes for pre-empting any further public conversation on his true ordeals under RAB custody.
