The Tannery Workers Union warned that no one should be paid less than the minimum wage announced by the Ministry of Labour and Employment.
The central leaders of the union made this demand at a public meeting of tannery workers organised at Hemayetpur Leather Industry City on Thursday, says a press release.
Union President Abul Kalam Azad presided over the meeting, which was mediated by Deputy General Secretary TM Liaquat Hossain.
Senior Vice President Hadiul Islam, General Secretary Abdul Malek, Organising Secretary Abdur Rahim, Publicity Secretary Md Shahid, and Labour Law Affairs Secretary Md Mamun Mia were also present at the meeting, among others.
Abul Kalam Azad criticised the delay in implementing the minimum wage in Hemayetpur Leather Industry City.
The owners recommended the minimum wage, but a delay in its implementation is unfortunate, he added.
He also urged the owners to swiftly implement the minimum wage to prevent any undesirable situations, as the stability of the industry is closely linked to the overall development of the country.
Abdul Malek said most factories lack labour certificates, personal protective equipment, and proper chemical management, and factories have already started firing skilled workers without paying them fair wages.
He expressed concern that if the current situation persists, it will be impossible to attain LWG certification.
