The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has found that former education minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhoury and the entities associated with him has deposited over Tk1.13 billion to and withdrew Tk973 million from 41 accounts in different banks.

It has also found that he amassed illegal wealth worth around Tk30 million and had more "suspicious” transactions. A case was filed against him for the offences, said ACC Director General (Prevention) Akhtar Hossain.

ACC Deputy Director Kamalesh Mandal filed the case with their Integrated District Office in Dhaka.

The ACC spokesperson said Mohibul had declared movable and immovable assets worth Tk54.4 million in his income tax documents. Of them, information on assets worth Tk29.4 million was not found. A case has been registered against him for amassing wealth disproportionate to his known sources of income.

The ACC has decided to issue a wealth statement notice against his wife Emma Clare Burton as “evidence has been found” against her for acquiring wealth worth Tk8.4 million.

There has been no trace of Mohibul since the fall of the Awami League government in the July-August mass uprising. He has also been accused in a murder case surrounding the movement.

Akhtar Hossain, director general (prevention) of ACC, said specific complaints of irregularities and corruption of government officials will be scrutinised and legal action will be taken.
