UP member, son killed in Madaripur clash

A union parishad member and his son were killed Friday morning in a clash over territorial control in Madaripur’s Kalkini upazila.

Fifteen others were also injured in the clash, when some crude bombs were hurled.

The deceased are: Bashgari Union Parishad member Akter Shikder and his son Maruf Shikder, confirmed Kalkini Police Station Officer-in-Charge Humayun Kabir.

Police and army troops have been deployed to the scene to contain tensions, said Sheikh Sabbir Hossain, additional superintendent of Madaripur District Police, in an exchange with reporters.

For the past couple of days, the victim Akter Shikder was in a dispute with fellow union parishad member Mostafizur Rahman Sumon over territorial control, locals said.

Akter Shikder was hacked to death on the spot, while his son died from critical injuries while undergoing treatment at a hospital.

The other injured have also bee hospitalised.
