A death row convict who escaped from Kashimpur High Security Jail on 6 August last year has been arrested in Chattogram.

A team from the Anti-Terrorism Unit (ATU) of police apprehended Sumon Jamadder, 27, son of Mostafa Jamaddar from Bhukhaitola Bandhabpara in Mathbaria of Pirojpur, on Sunday.

Barrister Mahfujul Alam Russel, superintendent of police (Media and Awareness Wing) of the ATU, confirmed the arrest to the Daily Sun on Monday.

Sumon was sentenced to death on 31 January 2016 by a Pirojpur tribunal for the rape and murder of a 10-year-old girl in Mathbaria on 5 October 2014. He had been serving his sentence in Kashimpur High Security Jail.

On 6 August last year, he escaped along with several other inmates and went into hiding. Following the jailbreak, the prison authorities filed a case against Sumon and other escapees with Konabari Police Station in Gazipur on 14 August 2024.

In addition to his death sentence, Sumon is an accused in 10 other cases filed with Mathbaria Police Station.
