Former public administration minister Farhad Hossain has been placed on a three-day remand in a case filed for attacking students during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.

Senior Judicial Magistrate of Meherpur Judicial Magistrate Court Begum Sharmin Nahar passed the order on Monday.

In the same case, the court granted a two-day remand each for Farhad’s brother, Sarfaraz Hossain Mridul, and his brother-in-law, Abdus Samad Babul Biswas, the vice-president of the Meherpur district unit Awami League.

Sadar police station Inspector (Investigation) Selim Jahangir, also the investigating officer of the case, sought five days to interrogate the three accused.

During the hearing, activists of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and the BNP staged demonstrations on the court premises, demanding exemplary punishment for the accused.

The case was filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act by Rashedul Islam following an attack on the demonstrators during the movement at Darbeshpur village in Meherpur Sadar upazila on 5 August.

Farhad was shown arrested in the case and transferred to Meherpur from Dhaka Central Jail on 29 January.

The next day, he was placed on a two-day remand in another case.

On 14 September, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) apprehended him in the Eskaton area of the capital. The former minister faces multiple charges in murder and other criminal cases in both Dhaka and Meherpur.
