The government has promoted 764 retired officials, who were deprived of due elevation during the fascist Awami League regime, with retrospective effect, in a move aimed at rectifying perceived injustices within the civil service.

The Ministry of Public Administration issued five separate notifications on Sunday to this end following approval from the president.

Among the former officials, 119 were given the rank of secretary, 528 additional secretary, 41 grade-1, 72 joint secretary and four were granted the rank of deputy secretary.

Retired officials who were deprived of their advancements during the AL regime were initially asked to apply until 30 September seeking redress. Later, the deadline was extended by three more days.

During this time, the committee received around 1,540 applications. After scrutinising them, it recommended that 764 officers be promoted with retrospective effect.

The Awami League government collapsed on 5 August last year in the face of a mass uprising and since then, deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has fled to India.

The interim government, led by Prof Muhammad Yunus, was formed on 8 August. It decided to reshuffle the administration, sending a significant number of officials on forced retirement, cancelling contractual appointments and promoting those who were "deprived" during the previous government's tenure.

It also decided to investigate the cases of retired officials who allege they were unfairly denied promotions during the Awami League regime from 2009 to 2024.
