A schoolgirl, who was critically injured after being stabbed while performing Islamic prayers in her bedroom, died at a hospital early Friday.

The deceased was identified as Mahi Akter, 15, daughter of Jewel Rana from Bogurapara in Dipnagar, under Kaharol upazila in Dinajpur.

According to police and family members, around 6:30pm on Wednesday, Mahi was offering Maghrib (evening) prayers in her bedroom when Arif Hossain, 18, attacked her with a knife. The assailant had allegedly been harassing her and became violent after she rejected his romantic advances.

Mahi was rushed to Dinajpur Medical College Hospital in critical condition and admitted to the surgical ward. She succumbed to her injuries around 3am on Friday.

Arif, son of Abul Kalam from Bhattaga village in Kaharol upazila, was arrested within four hours of the attack.

Ruhul Amin, officer-in-charge of Kaharol Police Station, said that the accused was produced before a court on Thursday.

“The case filed by the victim's father will be converted to a murder case now following the girl’s death,” he added.
