Bangabandhu National Stadium, the country's premier multi-purpose sports venue, has been renamed National Stadium, Dhaka.
The National Sports Council (NSC) issued a directive on Saturday, signed by its secretary, Md Aminul Islam.
Originally built in 1954 as a cricketing venue, the stadium was first known as Dhaka Stadium and later as Dhaka National Stadium.
In 1996, a proposal was introduced to rename it after Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, which received final approval in 1998.
Located in Motijheel, the National Stadium has served as the home venue for the national football team.
Notably, the stadium hosted an international friendly between Argentina and Nigeria in 2011, as well as the opening ceremony of the ICC World Cup that same year.
