CNG-run auto rickshaw drivers on Sunday blocked different key roads across the capital city, protesting the government order to enforce metre-based fares.
Till the filing of this report, the drivers had blocked Mohammadpur three-road intersection, Mirpur-10 intersection, Mirpur-14 intersection and Rampura bridge intersection. Law enforcers maintained very small presence at the protest sites.
The movement caused huge suffering for office commuters and other passengers.
The CNG-run rickshaw drivers have been charging more than the fares calculated by metres built for the vehicles, prompting many passengers to complain of exorbitant charges.
However, the drivers claim the government-set metre-based fares are too low for them to afford the heightened vehicle rents, and daily family expenses.
On top of scrapping the metre-based system, the drivers also demanded a raise in fares, and end to police harassment.
