Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury on Tuesday said the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), a specialised unit of Bangladesh Police, will be reconstituted if it is necessary.

He made the comment while talking to reporters following a meeting of the advisory council committee on law and order at the secretariat.

“[At the meeting], we discussed the RAB issue. We have made a proposal – a new name – for the battalion,” he said.

When asked if the name will be changed, the adviser said, “It will be decided in the next meeting.”

Besides, Jahangir said, the battalion will be rebuilt if required.

The RAB has been facing allegations of violating human rights and its involvement in enforced disappearances and murders, particularly in the name of gunfights.

During the July-August uprising, there were also allegations of shooting at demonstrators from RAB helicopters.

Of late, in its fact-finding report, the UN human rights office has recommended disbanding the Rapid Action Battalion.
