The Biplobi Chhatra Parishad, a new student organisation, has held a black flag procession, opposing the participation of President Mohammed Shahabuddin in observing Amar Ekushey and International Mother Language Day.
They brought out the procession late Thursday at the Anti-Terrorism Raju Memorial Sculpture on the Dhaka University campus, protesting the arrival of the president at the Central Shaheed Minar.
President Shahabuddin arrived at the Shaheed Minar at 11:59pm on Thursday to pay tribute to the martyrs of the historic Language Movement and placed a wreath at the altar as the clock struck 12:01am on Friday.
Demonstrators also staged a sit-in in front of the Russel Tower, one of the entrance points of the Central Shaheed Minar.
Biplobi Chhatra Parishad Convener Abdul Wahed said the president promoted the July mass killing by legitimising the dummy parliamentary election held in January 2024, conducting the oath of office to the fascist Hasina's government, and sanctioning all its illegal and unlawful acts. “He must resign and face trial.”
Member Secretary Hasan Mohammad Arif said, “We, the students and people, are peacefully trying to obstruct him [the president] by bringing out a black flag procession in memory of the martyrs of the July massacre.”
During the protest, they demanded a ban on the Awami League and the resignation of the party-affiliated individuals who hold various state positions.
