Workers of a garment factory blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway on Tuesday morning, demanding outstanding wages.

The demonstration halted traffic movement on the highway, causing immense suffering to thousands of passengers, said Gazipur Industrial Police.

The protesting workers claimed that they have not received their salaries for two months. They resorted to blocking the road after repeated delays from the factory authorities.

Earlier, in a notice, BHIS Apparels Ltd, said the workers behaved unruly on factory premises on Monday and kept ignoring the management’s request to resume work. The work boycott was illegal, the notice read.

To avoid potential sabotage, the factory would remain closed starting Tuesday until the situation improves, it said.
