The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has asked the police to initiate red notices through Interpol against 10 former ministers and advisers of the ousted Awami League government for their crimes against humanity during the 2024 mass uprising.

ICT Chief Prosecutor Advocate Mohammad Tajul Islam shared the information while speaking at a press briefing at his office in the capital on Thursday.

The ICT chief prosecutor has sent a letter to the Ministry of Home Affairs and the police seeking Interpol red notices. "We have prepared a court order and the necessary documents and forwarded a letter to the home ministry and police headquarters. Now the ministry will take the necessary steps in line with the law," said Tajul Islam.

He said the individuals face multiple charges related to crimes against humanity committed during the uprising.

According to him, the prosecution had submitted several petitions to the tribunal seeking direction for the Inspector General of Police to take necessary steps to arrest the 10 individuals through Interpol. The tribunal has granted the petitions, and the orders have now been sent to the police headquarters.

In connection with the mass killings that took place during the July-August uprising, arrest warrants have already been issued for 141 individuals in 22 cases. Of them, 54 have been arrested, while 87 remained absconding, said Tajul Islam.

Providing a case overview, the ICT chief prosecutor said a total of 339 complaints have been filed with the tribunal. Of these, arrest warrants have been issued in 22 miscellaneous cases. Investigations are currently ongoing in 39 cases.

He further said more than 1,500 people were martyred during the July uprising. Around 25,000 students and citizens were injured. There is undeniable evidence of every incident. "We are confident we will be able to prove these before the tribunal," he said.

Earlier on 10 November 2024, the government sent a letter to Interpol seeking a red notice against ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
