The advisory council of Prof Mohammad Yunus-led interim government is going to hold an emergency meeting tonight against the backdrop of the demand for a ban on Awami League getting louder.
The meeting will be held this evening with Chief Adviser Prof Mohammad Yunus in the chair, but the agenda and venue of the meeting could not be known immediately, said a source within the government.
However, the source said the meeting will discuss some crucial issues, including the evolving political situation related to the demand for a ban on Awami League.
Besides, leaders and activists of all political parties, except BNP, have been continuing demonstration at Shahbagh intersection for the last three days to meet their demand for a ban on Awami League.
In response to the demand, the government on Friday issued a statement, saying that it has taken a serious note to ban Awami League due to its autocratic rule and involvement in terrorist activities leading to widespread human rights violations.
"Instead of cooperation with ongoing investigations, the party continues to try blatantly to jeopardise stability of the country," said the statement issued by the Chief Adviser's Press Wing.
The government will soon take a decision in this regard in consultation with the country’s political parties, it said.
"In this regard, the government is giving due consideration to the UN report that has highlighted the terrorist activities of AL leaders and supporters during the July uprising. Until a decision is taken, all are requested to exercise patience," the statement read.
It is worth mentioning that, in response to public demand, the government has already banned the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), the AL student wing, which is widely accused of perpetrating violence and carrying out terrorist activities, under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
Additionally, the government plans to immediately amend the International Crimes (Tribunals) Act to incorporate provisions for the trial of associations and political parties associated and connected with crimes against humanity, according to the statement.
