In every nation, there are institutions regarded as symbols of national unity and sovereignty—guardians of independence and territorial integrity. The armed forces are such an institution. Across the world, militaries are kept above political or social controversies. Yet, in recent times, attempts are being made by a certain vested group to spread confusion and misinformation about Bangladesh’s Armed Forces—an institution that represents the nation’s sovereignty. Through social media, fabricated narratives and provocative content are being circulated to malign the forces.
On Saturday, the Inter-Services Public Relations Directorate (ISPR) announced a ban, effective Sunday until further notice, on all forms of gatherings, rallies, and processions in certain areas of Dhaka, citing public interest and movement. The restricted zones include Kochukhet Road, Bijoy Sarani to the Chief Adviser’s Office area, BAF Shaheen College to the Mohakhali flyover area, Sainik Club, Bhashantek, Matikata, ECB Square, and adjoining localities.
On the same day, another ISPR press release stated that a dismissed soldier had been arrested along with two associates for attempting to incite violence and unrest. The press note revealed that Mohammad Naimul Islam, a former soldier, had been dismissed from service due to allegations of demanding dowry, domestic abuse, and multiple violations of military discipline. Legal proceedings against him are currently underway.
The statement also mentioned that since the 5 August uprising, Naimul had been plotting subversive activities in coordination with other dismissed and retired military personnel. They were allegedly preparing for a major act of sabotage under the guise of protest and had been actively spreading provocative content online. When an army liaison team attempted to de-escalate the situation through dialogue, Naimul and his associates reportedly attacked a soldier with a local weapon, prompting immediate intervention by a nearby patrol unit, which detained the accused.
Following this, various rumours and inflammatory remarks have been circulating on social platforms, further escalating tensions. It is evident that since the 5 August revolution, certain quarters have engaged in deliberate efforts to tarnish the image of the Armed Forces, often making uninformed and irresponsible comments that threaten national integrity and security.
If we objectively analyse the events since 5 August, it is clear that the Armed Forces have played a critical role in maintaining peace, order, and security across the country. It is their relentless dedication that has allowed ordinary citizens to live with a sense of safety. The ability of people to go about their daily lives is due in no small part to the Armed Forces’ constant vigilance and support.
Here are some notable examples of their commitment:
1. Crisis Management During the July Revolution:
During the widespread unrest that followed the July uprising, when mob violence and lawlessness escalated, the Armed Forces stepped in with patience and discipline. One such instance occurred at Shahbagh Police Station, where a group brought in a man accused of sexual harassment. When a heated exchange between a young woman and an army captain named Ashiq broke out, he defused the situation with remarkable restraint and professionalism. The video went viral and Captain Ashiq received nationwide praise, later being personally commended by the Army Chief on 18 August.
2. Flood Relief in Southern Bangladesh:
In September last year, during devastating floods in the south, army personnel conducted rescue missions. One viral video showed Lance Corporal (Gunner) Kazi Sujan using his own knee as a step to help pregnant and ill women climb into army trucks. His compassionate actions earned him the title of "superhero" from many online.
3. Support for a Victim of Brutality in Magura:
Following the public outcry over a brutal assault on an 8-year-old girl in Magura, the Armed Forces arranged for her advanced treatment at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH). When little Asiya was fighting for her life, the army appealed to the public for prayers. Though she sadly passed away, the military ensured she was returned to her home with honour via army helicopter—a touching display of humanity.
4. Honouring the Injured of the Revolution:
In March, the Army Chief hosted an Iftar in honour of students injured during the August revolution. General Waker-uz-Zaman reaffirmed the military’s support for those who sacrificed in the fight against tyranny, underscoring their continued commitment to the people.
5. Professionalism Amid Student Protests:
Another widely shared video in April showed a high-ranking officer being disrespected by protesting students. Despite the mistreatment, the lieutenant colonel maintained composure and handled the situation with grace—an act applauded across the nation.
These examples highlight just a few of the countless instances where the Armed Forces have stood by the people with courage, patience, and compassion. For the past ten months, they have been working tirelessly—upholding peace, defending democracy, and embracing their role as the nation's shield.
As Bangladesh walks its democratic path, the role of the Armed Forces must be respected. They are not just protectors of our borders—they are guardians of our collective dignity and national identity. To question their integrity or politicise their actions is to undermine the very foundation of national security.
Analysts stress that it is the responsibility of all citizens, media, and civil society to act with accountability and avoid contributing to damaging narratives. The Armed Forces must remain above controversy—for they are the ultimate symbol of our unity, sovereignty, and hope.
