From Tajuddin to Salehuddin: A Glimpse of 54 Budgets
A A

Economic Advisor Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed will present the national budget for the fiscal year 2025–26 today, Monday (June 2). This will be the 54th budget and the first budget under the interim government led by Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus.

According to the Ministry of Finance, for the first time since independence, the upcoming budget will be smaller than the previous fiscal year's. In this budget, the government's development expenditure will be reduced by BDT 350 billion, setting it at BDT 2.3 trillion.

As a result, the government will have limited scope to focus on development to meet public expectations. However, the government is under considerable pressure regarding operational expenditure. Operating expenses are expected to be BDT 5.45 trillion, which is BDT 380 billion more than the previous year.

Tajuddin Ahmed, as the finance minister of the post-independence government, presented the country’s first budget in 1972. That first budget of the newly independent country was modest in size. In the 54 years since, the budget has expanded significantly along with economic growth.

Below is a chronological overview of the 53 national budgets of independent Bangladesh, highlighting total budget amounts and Annual Development Programme (ADP) allocations:
