Mashrur Arefin, Managing Director and CEO of City Bank, has been elected the new chairman of the Association of Bankers Bangladesh (ABB), the platform representing top banking professionals in the country.

He was unanimously elected at a recent meeting of the ABB Board of Governors and will serve as chairman until the association’s next Annual General Meeting (AGM).

The appointment comes following the resignation of Selim R. F. Hussain, who recently stepped down as Managing Director and CEO of BRAC Bank.

The Board also elected Mohammad Ali, Managing Director and CEO of Pubali Bank, as Vice Chairman. Abul Kashem Mohammed Shirin, Managing Director and CEO of Dutch-Bangla Bank, who is already serving as Vice Chairman, will continue in that role.

Mashrur Arefin began his banking career in 1995 as a management trainee at ANZ Grindlays Bank. Over the past three decades, he has worked with several major financial institutions, including Standard Chartered Bank in Qatar, ANZ’s head office in Melbourne, American Express Bank, and Citibank N.A. He has been leading City Bank as MD and CEO for the past six years and served as ABB’s vice chairman for nearly four years. He is also a noted writer and translator.

Mohammad Ali joined Pubali Bank in 2008 as Chief Technology Officer and later held senior leadership roles including Deputy Managing Director, Additional Managing Director, and Chief Operating Officer. Under his leadership, the bank has witnessed significant growth in profitability. He has also served as CAMLCO, Chief Risk Officer, and chairman of the bank’s credit committee.
