A Coordinated Army Crackdown Is Only Cure for Mob Menace!
A A

Mob violence continues to spiral across the country, seemingly immune to government warnings, police action, or even the presence of the armed forces. Neither the threat of dengue or COVID-19, nor the deployment of soldiers, appears to deter these lawless groups. Strangely, even calling them "mobs" seems to offend them—yet they proceed with even greater audacity.

While past interventions by the army offered temporary relief, these were isolated actions. The resurgence of violence in various regions in new and unpredictable forms suggests that only a coordinated and sustained military crackdown can curb this escalating crisis. Mere threats and sporadic action no longer suffice.

Public belief is firm: no other force is as capable or as trusted as the armed forces in handling such unrest. The army, endowed with magistracy power, has already shown its resolve against mob violence. Spot interventions in Dhaka and Rangpur brought temporary calm, giving citizens hope. However, the recent wave of attacks—on individuals, homes, and institutions—has shaken public confidence again.

Mob brutality has become a social plague—fuelled by impunity, fear, and disorder. From lynchings in Comilla, Dhaka, and Gazipur to the desecration of shrines and assaults on women’s sports, the past 10 months have seen an alarming rise in vigilante violence.

Despite repeated reassurances from the Chief of Army Staff and the military high command, the public wonders why their full authority, including judicial powers, is not being utilised. The army is not just a force for national defence—it is the people’s last line of trust.

If mobs are left unchecked, even the gains of the 5 August uprising and civil-military unity may unravel. The time has come for an uncompromising, sweeping army-led operation to root out the mob menace—before it's too late.
