Sri Lankan inform batsman Kusal Mendis said on Tuesday that healthy background in the dressing room helps them perform well in the recent past.

Mendis scored a brilliant hundred to help Sri Lanka clinch the three-match ODI series against Bangladesh as they defeated the tourist by 99 runs at Dambulla on Tuesday.

Sri Lanka earned success on seven occasions out of their the last nine ODI series and Kusal credited skipper Charith Asalanka and backroom staff led by Sanath Jayasuriya for providing a calm dressing room.

“About 2-3 years back we were not performing well and were down in the rankings. As a player in the team I feel proud that we have been able to win so many series. Charith is captaining the side well and there is a lot of support from player management side as well because the back ground is healthy we are able to perform well. Whatever situation or pressure we are under it is the coaching staff that absorbs it that is why the players are able to play their natural game,” said Kusal.

“All three departments we are doing well. We sometimes lose a match by doing a mistake we have learnt from our mistakes. It’s not one person who wins the match it’s the contribution of each different individual match by match. One of the players on his day must take the responsibility to step forward and win a match that is the norm of a good team,” he said.

Kusal, who scored breezy 124, added he had learnt from his last innings that he needs to be blamed for their defeat for throwing away his wicket after scoring 31-ball 56.

“After I got out is when I realised that the decision I took was wrong, it was not an easy wicket and I was the set batsmen and should have continued batting, that is reason for our defeat. The head coach and batting coach spoke to me and said that when you are in the runs that I should go for a big score. My rhythm from the last match and today was different and I mixed caution with aggression,” said Kusal.

“We(Batting coach Thilina Kandamby) spoke a lot about that. When I was batting in the nets also he always kept reminding me that when you get set to go for a big score not to throw away the wicket after getting to 50-60. He had high expectations from me for this match and I am happy that I was able to fulfill it,” he said.

“I am extremely happy that more than scoring my 6th ODI hundred I was able to contribute towards the win. It was a crucial match for us and I believe I did my best,” he said.
