Two of Bangladesh's most prominent women footballers, Tohura Khatun and Shamsunnahar Jr, are set to make their debut in a foreign league as they head to Bhutan to join Royal Thimphu College FC.
The duo, regulars in the Bangladesh national women’s team and known for their goal-scoring prowess, flew out on Monday morning to join the Bhutanese club, which featured in last year’s AFC Women’s Club Championship and is expected to participate again this season. If registration and logistics go smoothly, both Tohura and Shamsunnahar could feature in the prestigious continental competition.
Last year, the club failed to field Bangladesh captain Sabina Khatun in the AFC tournament due to registration issues. Sabina currently plays for Paro FC alongside Ritu Porna Chakma, Monika Chakma, and Matsushima Sumaya. Several other Bangladeshi stars — Maria Manda, Sanjida Akhter, Masura Parvin, Rupna Chakma, and Shamsunnahar Sr — have also represented Transport United and Thimphu FC.
With the addition of Tohura and Shamsunnahar Jr, the number of Bangladeshi women footballers playing in the Bhutanese league now stands at 12.
The Bhutan Women’s League runs until November.
