Waterlogging causes suffering in Ctg

Residents of some low-lying areas in the Chattogram city of Chattogram suffered due to waterlogging caused by torrential rainfall on Monday.

Frequenters, including HSC examinees, students of educational institutions, garment workers, and office-goers, faced severe inconvenience in the morning due to submerged roads.

However, the logged water started draining out slowly as the day advanced. Residents said the rain that started on early Saturday continued till Monday afternoon with some breaks. The Met Office in the city’s Ambagan area recorded 102mm of rainfall till 12pm.

Assistant Meteorologist Abdur Rahman of the Met Office also forecasted “moderate” to “heavy” rainfall over most places and “heavy” rainfall at some places until the next day.

Landslides also may take place in some areas of the Chattogram division due to the heavy rainfall, he added.

The city’s low-lying areas, including Murapur, Bahoddarhat, Sholoshahar Gate 2, Chawk Bazar, Chandgaon, Bakolia, DC Road, Kapasgola and Badurtala, were inundated during the rainfall.

Water entered residences, businesses and commercial establishments in the areas.

Moreover, continuous rainfall over the past few days also led to a worsening flood situation at several villages along the River Halda under Raozan upazila in the district.

Low-lying areas at unions such as Noapara, Urkirchar, Binajuri and West Gujra were submerged, affecting normal life and causing severe hardship for the residents. Mentionable, following the assumption of office by the current interim government, an action plan to mitigate waterlogging in Chattogram city was formulated at the directive of the chief adviser in January. At that time, a target was set to ensure visible improvements to the waterlogging situation before the onset of the monsoon.

Consequently, Chattogram city has been experiencing improved conditions this year, compared to the waterlogging caused in previous occasions.
