Even in the morning of 5 August last year, dictator Sheikh Hasina’s strongest backer, India, was confident the Awami League chief would in the end survive the toughest challenge to her 15-year rule.

BBC published a report in this regard on Tuesday, citing Indian intelligence and cabinet sources.

The day saw historic jubiliation across Bangladesh but marked a reckoning for Indian politicians. Yet, they were almost clueless about the events unfolding across the border that could reshape regional geopolitics. Only three senior ministers and top spies kept a close watch on the dangers, but they too were confident that Hasina would ultimately triumph over the raging public anger.

Lawmakers across all parties were busy finalizing bills for approval on the first day of final week of the monsoon parliamentary season.
