Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Professor Mia Golam Porwar has said that people’s lives have become unbearable due to the atrocities of extortionists.

In a statement posted on Facebook last Thursday night, condemning and protesting the brutal killing of a journalist in Gazipur, he made these remarks.

Golam Porwar said, "Failing to get extortion money, they are not only attacking business establishments but also killing people mercilessly. They are even killing each other over disputes regarding the division of extortion money.

It is now imperative to build a nationwide social resistance against extortionists and their patrons. I call upon the people of the country to unite in a social movement against them."

He further said that the law and order situation in the country has severely deteriorated. "When even a journalist is not safe, where is the safety of ordinary people?"

In the statement, Jamaat’s Secretary General said, "On August 7 (Thursday) at around 8:30 pm, a group of terrorists brutally hacked journalist Asaduzzaman Tuhin to death with sharp weapons in the Chandna Chowrasta area of Gazipur city.

He had been working as Gazipur correspondent for the daily Protidiner Kagoj. We strongly condemn and protest this brutal murder and express our deep concern. I pray for the forgiveness of the deceased’s soul and extend my deepest condolences to his bereaved family and relatives."

He added, "On the afternoon of August 7, Asaduzzaman Tuhin had done a live broadcast in Gazipur regarding extortion activities. That very night, the extortion gang brutally hacked him to death.

This heinous killing is a grave warning for the nation. The current government has utterly failed to ensure the safety of people’s lives and property."

In his statement, he urged the concerned authorities to promptly arrest the killers of Asaduzzaman Tuhin and ensure exemplary punishment for them.
