Actress Shomi Kaiser has been granted bail by a High Court division bench in a case filed over an alleged attempted murder during the anti-discrimination movement.
Earlier, on 9 April this year, the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court had ordered her arrest in connection with the shooting of Jubaer Hasan Yusuf, a 20-year-old honours student at Tongi Government College.
According to case documents, Jubaer joined the anti-discrimination movement on 4 August. Around 12:50 pm that day, while marching in Azampur under Uttara East Police Station, he was shot in the left shoulder and collapsed. He later recovered after treatment.
On 22 August, Jubaer filed a case with Uttara East Police Station, naming 11 people and accusing another 150–200 unidentified individuals. Shomi Kaiser was listed as a suspected accused in the case.
On 8 December, the actress sought bail from the High Court, which granted her three months’ bail. However, on 12 December, the Chamber Judge Court of the Appellate Division, led by Justice Md. Rezaul Haque, suspended the bail order.
Earlier, on the night of 5 November, police arrested Shomi Kaiser from a residence in Uttara Sector-4.
