A rickshaw puller who was beaten and later jailed after being arrested at Dhanmondi-32 for offering flowers has been granted bail.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate MA Azharul Islam granted bail to Azizur Rahman, the rickshaw puller, following a hearing on Sunday.

Defence lawyer Farzana Yasmin Rakhi submitted the bail petition, which was opposed by the prosecution. After hearing both sides, the court approved the petition.

Earlier on 15 August, Azizur Rahman was assaulted by a mob at Dhanmondi-32 while attempting to pay tribute to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman with flowers.

Police later detained him from the spot.

On 16 August, he was produced before the court as a suspect in an attempted murder case filed during last year’s July uprising.

Sub-Inspector of Dhanmondi Police Station Mohammad Touhidur Rahman requested that he be kept in custody pending investigation, which the court initially granted by rejecting his bail.

According to the case statement, on 4 August last year, during the anti-discrimination student movement, Md Ariful Islam was shot near New Market–Science Lab area in the capital.

The attackers allegedly fired gunshots and hurled petrol bombs and hand grenades around 2:30pm. Ariful was critically injured when a bullet pierced his back but recovered after two months of treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Ariful later filed an attempted murder case with Dhanmondi Police Station on 2 April this year.
