A Jhenidah court has given a one-year jail term to Indian police officer P John Selvaraz for illegally entering Bangladesh through the border at Moheshpur upazila last year.

On Wednesday, Moheshpur Senior Judicial Magistrate Riyad Hasan passed the jail sentence, after the Indian confessed to his crime.

Selvarez is a sub-inspector in the Indian police force, and hails from the country’s Tamil Nadu state.

As per the case statement, Selvarez was arrested from the Matila area on 22 March last year, soon after he illegally entered into Bangladesh territory.

On 13 June 2024, he secured bail but, soon afterwards, went into hiding. On 13 August 2024, he was arrested again when attempting to sneak back into India.
