Chhatra Dal alleges intimidation of candidates at AF Rahman Hall

Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) has alleged that its candidates for the upcoming Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) polls are being obstructed and blackmailed at Sir AF Rahman Hall.

At a press conference held in front of Madhur Canteen on Monday afternoon, JCD-backed vice-president candidate Abidul Islam Khan accused Ashikul Haque Rifat, an assistant general secretary (AGS) candidate from the hall, of intimidating students who are working in favour of JCD’s panel.

“We have information that he is blocking rival candidates, issuing threats and blackmailing those who support us. I urge the DUCSU election commission and the hall administration to investigate the matter and take necessary steps,” said Abidul.

The allegations quickly drew attention among students on Tuesday.

However, responding to the claims, Rifat — a 2019–20 session Journalism Department student and Dhaka University correspondent of the daily Amader Shomoy — outright rejected them.

“The allegations are completely baseless and fabricated. They are only spreading false propaganda out of fear of my growing popularity. I call upon Abidul Islam Khan to provide proper evidence,” he said.

Rifat added that despite giving a 24-hour window for proof, “no clarification has been provided and even my phone calls have gone unanswered.”
