The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed a case against Saima Wazed Putul, daughter of fascist Sheikh Hasina, for misappropriating Tk450 crore through Suchona Foundation.

ACC Director General (Prevention) Md Akhtar Hossain confirmed it at a press conference at ACC head office in the capital on Monday.

“Suchona Foundation transacted Tk9,309,773,959 through 14 bank accounts. Of this, Tk4,479,530,193 have been embezzled,” he said.

At least 34 more people, including former ministers, members of parliament, the NBR chairman, and top businesspersons, were involved in this embezzlement, he further said.

The list of accused includes former Bangladesh Cricket Board president and MP Nazmul Hasan Papon, former MP and businessman Salman F Rahman, Summit Group Chairman Aziz Khan, United Group Chairman Moinuddin Hasan Rashid, Meghna Group Chairman Mustafa Kamal, and several former senior NBR officials.

Three categories of people were accused in this case. Of them, 11 were members of the Board of Trustees of Suchona Foundation, eight donor businesspersons, and 16 NBR officials who provided the necessary approvals for tax exemption.

The ACC official said, “This foundation had obtained registration from the Department of Social Services to work for the welfare of the disabled. However, it only embezzled money without spending anything on their welfare.”

Businesspersons donated to this foundation to get “extra facilities” from the government, as it was run by the then-PM’s daughter, he added.

In January this year, the ACC raided the Suchona Foundation in Dhanmondi and gathered substantial evidence of large-scale misappropriation, tax evasion, and corruption. The case accused NBR officials, including the former chairman, of granting unlawful tax exemptions to the foundation, worth nearly Tk100 crore.
