Three individuals have been arrested over the rape of a newlywed woman when she was visiting her in-laws’ house in Patuakhali.

Police have arrested Kawsar, Ashish Gain, and Ripon Sohag nearly two months after the gang-rape and robbery, confirmed Additional Superintendent of Police (Bauphal Circle) Arif Mohammad Sakur.

Acting on information, detectives arrested Kawsar from Maheshpur in Jhenaidah district, Ripon Sohag from a slum in Dhaka's Darus Salam area, and Ashish Gain from Patuakhali's Kalapara area on Wednesday and Thursday.

The 27-year-old newlywed woman was a Bangladeshi expatriate who came to visit her in-laws’ house in Paschim Badurtali village under Tiakhali union at Kalapara upazila of Patuakhali.

Two months after her arrival, on 14 July three miscreants broke through the window of the house of Tariqul Islam Sunan, a teacher and husband of the victim.

They tied up Sunan with rope and proceeded to violate his wife in turns in front of him. Other family members including his mother and sister were also held hostage at gunpoint.

Valuables worth 13 tolas of gold ornaments and Tk50,000 cash were looted from the house.

Later on the following day, a case was filed with Kalapara Police Station

Since then, police and the district detective branch have conducted joint drives. They also recovered the stolen mobile phone during the drives.
