Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has expressed profound shock at the death of legendary folk singer Farida Parveen.

In a condolence message, the Chief Adviser said that Farida Parveen was best known to her audience as the “Queen of Lalon Geeti” although she used to perform Nazrul Sangeet, patriotic and other songs.

For five decades, her voice carried the timeless songs of Lalon Shah to people’s hearts, taking “our underlying philosophy of our culture and meaning of life to a new height,” he said.

“Despite various adversities, Farida Parveen did not stay away from singing. Her passion for music has inspired generations after generations,” Professor Yunus said.

The Ekushey Padak-winning singer’s contributions to the music arena of Bangladesh will remain ever memorable and will continue to nurture fresh thoughts and creativity in the country’s cultural sphere, he added.

The Chief Adviser prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed profound sympathy to the bereaved family members.

Celebrated folk singer and the “Queen of Lalon Geeti” Farida Parveen passed away at a hospital in the city tonight at the age of 71 years.

She left behind her husband and four children to mourn her death.

Farida Parveen had been suffering from kidney ailments for long time. In recent weeks, her condition had worsened to the point that she required dialysis twice a week, hospital sources said.

On September 2, she was taken to Universal Medical College Hospital in Mohakhali for her routine dialysis. However, following the procedure, her condition deteriorated, and physicians advised her immediate hospitalisation.

She was then admitted to the hospital’s ICU, where her condition remained critical. On Wednesday, her condition worsened further, and physicians decided to place her on ventilation support.
