A solo painting exhibition titled “Immersion in the World Path” by noted Bangladeshi visual artist Sunil Kumar is underway at Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre in the capital’s Gulshan area.

The exhibition featured the works of Sunil Kumar, a Bangladeshi visual artist whose artistic journey spans over 25 years. With a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Chittagong and a Post-Graduation from the University of Dhaka, Kumar has earned distinction in painting, illustration, and graphic design. His works are housed in the Bangladesh National Museum and in several private collections.

High Commissioner of India Pranay Verma inaugurated the exhibition on Thursday. The inauguration was followed by a captivating Gaudiya Nritya dance performance titled “The Colours of Shakti”. The programme held at the Indian Cultural Centre (ICC) was attended by eminent personalities from Bangladesh’s art and cultural fraternity, including celebrated artist Monirul Islam, who joined the occasion as the Guest of Honour.

Underscoring the shared cultural heritage of the two countries, High Commissioner Pranay Verma said, “The modern art movements in Bangladesh and India have influenced each other deeply. Artists of both countries have drawn inspiration from each other’s works and in the process brought the two societies closer. The exhibition invites audiences to reflect on the myriad shared paths that connect the two peoples.”

Commenting on the works of the artist, the high commissioner said, “This solo exhibition by Sunil Kumar invites us to explore the complex narratives of human existence and its unyielding pursuit of meaning. His works capture the essence of life’s many paths, its beauty and its contradictions. His portrayal of women stands as a powerful testament to their resilience and grace amidst societal challenges. This exhibition is a celebration of artistic expressions of hope in the face of life’s challenges.”

Director of the Culture Centre, Ann Mary George spoke about the power of art as a bridge across communities. She said, “Through this initiative, we seek to create a meaningful platform for Bangladeshi artists to engage with the shared cultural traditions”.

The exhibition will remain open for two weeks at Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre, Gulshan.
