A Dhaka court on Monday ordered the jail-gate interrogation of Zubair Hossain, former Dhaka South unit general secretary of banned Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), in an attempted murder case linked to the July mass uprising.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ehsanul Islam passed the order after investigation officer Sub-Inspector Habib Faisal produced him before the court with a seven-day remand plea.
Opposing the remand petition, defence lawyer Mehedi Hasan Marin sought his bail.
After hearing both sides, the court granted one day to interrogate Zubair at the jail gate.
Earlier, on 18 September, Zubair was arrested by India’s Gede immigration police and later handed over to Bangladesh’s Darshana immigration authorities. He was then sent to jail through a Chuadanga court and produced before the Dhaka court on the same day, where he was shown arrested in the attempted murder case.
According to the case statement, on 5 August last year, Shoaib Shahriar joined the July movement in the Raisaheb Bazar area under Kotwali Police Station, where he sustained serious injuries after the accused allegedly opened fire on protesters. Shoaib later received treatment at hospital.
Irfan Ahmed, a fellow activist, filed an attempted murder case with Kotwali Police Station following the incident.
