For the first time in history, dementia has been formally recognised in the United Nations’ new political declaration on non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and mental health.
Experts warn that dementia could become the world’s third leading cause of death by 2040. With its inclusion, dementia is now officially part of the global public health and NCD priority agenda.
This milestone reflects the collective voice of millions of families, caregivers, and advocacy groups around the world who have long called for greater recognition and action.
Health leaders and rights activists welcomed the move, describing it as a critical step toward addressing the growing burden of dementia and ensuring stronger international commitment to prevention, care, and support.
