BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed has proposed that a referendum on the July Charter be held on the same day as the upcoming parliamentary elections.
Speaking at a meeting of the National Consensus Commission at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka on Sunday, Salahuddin said there are no legal barriers to holding the two votes simultaneously.
“The contents of the charter will be open to the people, and their verdict will be final. The next parliament will be bound to respect the referendum’s outcome,” he told reporters after the meeting.
He added that discussions within the commission were now at the final stage, with broad agreement reached on implementing the July Charter. “In principle, we are agreed. An ordinance titled the July National Charter 2025 may be issued ahead of the referendum,” he said.
According to Salahuddin, issues on which dissent remains will be reflected in individual parties’ election manifestos.
The BNP leader also noted that his party had withdrawn its earlier demand to seek judicial opinion under Article 106 of the constitution. “We now support issuing an ordinance under the July National Charter 2025, followed by a referendum,” he added.
