A new teachers’ organisation, University Teachers Link (UTL), was launched at the University of Chittagong (CU) with the formation of a 22-member convening committee on Thursday afternoon.
Prof Enayet Ullah Patwari of the Department of Political Science has taken charge as convener, while Prof Ibrahim Hossain of the Institute of Modern Languages has been named member secretary.
The announcement came during a launching ceremony held at the Faculty of Social Sciences conference room, where the organisation’s central member secretary, Prof Mohammad Bilal Hossain, unveiled the committee.
In a written statement, Prof Bilal Hossain said UTL emerged with a clear vision shaped by the spirit of the 1947 independence, the 1971 Liberation War, and the July 2024 Uprising.
“Our vision is to build a respected, independent, and committed academia guided by education, research, and moral responsibility,” he said. “We will work on five core principles — academic excellence, self-respect, national commitment, religious tolerance, and collective responsibility.”
The committee also includes joint conveners Prof Kazi Md Borkot Ali (Geography and Environmental Studies), Prof Md Rukunuzzaman Azad (Statistics), Prof Farzana Yasmin Chowdhury (Institute of Modern Languages), and Prof Siraj Uddin (Microbiology).
Prof Mohammad Rokon Uddin (English) and Lecturer Momin (Zoology) serve as joint member secretaries, while Prof Mohammad Harisur Rahman Howlader (Management) holds the treasurer position.
Other convening members represent various departments, including Geography, Zoology, Statistics, Psychology, Mathematics, Anthropology, Microbiology, Chemistry, Islamic History and Culture, Computer Science and Engineering, and Physical Education.
Prof Belal Hossain concluded that UTL aims to strengthen academic integrity and unity among teachers while contributing to a progressive and ethical higher education environment at the university.
