A Dhaka court on Saturday placed Bangladeshi-origin United States (US) citizen Enayet Karim Chowdhury's aide Md Azhar Ali Sarkar on a four-day remand in a case filed with Ramna Model Police Station under the Anti-terrorism Act.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Minhajur Rahman passed the order after police produced him before the court, seeking a seven-day remand.

The state prosecutor of the court Advocate Harun confirmed the information.

According to the remand plea, the accused, Md Azhar Ali Sarkar, along with other unidentified accused, in collusion with Enayet Karim Chowdhury, had been engaged in acts intended to endanger the integrity, solidarity, public security, and sovereignty of Bangladesh by creating panic among the public.

During the investigation, it was revealed that Azhar Ali Sarkar, 57, in collusion with other accused, has secretly consulted with a political group or any other unregistered organisation—or a registered but currently suspended or banned political organisation—on behalf of an influential foreign state, with the intent to destabilise the political, economic, and social situation of Bangladesh.

Earlier on 13 September, Enayet Karim, a Bangladeshi-born US citizen, was arrested over suspicious movements in a car around Minto Road.

According to the case documents, he is allegedly engaged in attempts to overthrow the interim government of Bangladesh by acting as an agent of a foreign intelligence agency, aiming to undermine public safety and national sovereignty.

During interrogation, Enayet reportedly admitted that he is a Bangladeshi-origin US citizen who arrived in Dhaka from New York on 6 September.
