A Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) leader was killed and another youth was injured in a knife attack by unidentified assailants in the Chowdhuryhat area of Hathazari upazila in Chattogram on Tuesday evening.

The deceased was identified as Opi Das, 25, president of the Chikondundi union unit of Chhatra Dal. The injured youth was identified as Tamim.

The incident occurred around 8pm on Eden City Residential Road near Chowdhuryhat Bazar, according to police and locals.

Hathazari Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Monjur Quader said a group of miscreants attacked Opi and Tamim in a narrow alley of the local market before fleeing. "Opi was stabbed in the neck while Tamim suffered injuries in the abdomen," the OC said.

Both victims were taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH), where doctors declared Opi dead. Tamim is undergoing treatment. The body has been sent to the hospital morgue for autopsy.

Local trader Khurshid Alam, a witness to the murder, said the incident followed an altercation, though the cause of the dispute was not immediately clear.

Police have launched a drive to identify and arrest the attackers.
