The Bangladesh women’s football team embark on a fresh chapter today as they head to Thailand for two international friendly matches against the hosts — scheduled for 24 and 27 October — before returning home on 28 October.

For Bangladesh, these fixtures are far more than warm-up games. They offer a vital opportunity to measure progress against a stronger Asian side.

Despite their steady rise and success in regional tournaments, the red-and-green girls have rarely tested themselves against elite-level opposition.

Thailand, ranked 53rd in the FIFA standings compared to Bangladesh’s 104, remain one of Asia’s most established women’s football nations. They have appeared in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 17 times, finishing runners-up on three occasions, third once, and fourth once — even lifting the title on home soil in 1983. Although they missed out on qualification for the most recent Asian Cup, their pedigree remains undeniable.

Head coach Peter James Butler viewed the tour as a key stage in the team’s long-term growth.

“Playing against Thailand is a great opportunity. They’re technically and tactically more advanced than us. We’ve analysed their game — their passing, speed, and movement are top-notch. But I want our girls to play bravely, not just sit back and defend,” said Butler.

“If we only defend, we’ll be punished. I want the team to play with an attacking mindset — to fight for victory, not just to avoid defeat.”

Ahead of the tour, Bangladesh held a 20-day training camp at the Korean EPZ facility in Chattogram. Butler praised the setup, describing it as “one of the best environments” available for preparation. After returning from Thailand, the team will resume camp there following a short three-day break.

Mahfuza Akhter Kiran, chairperson of the BFF Women’s Wing, described the matches as a crucial stepping stone for Bangladesh’s continued development.

“Thailand are a very strong side, even though they couldn’t qualify for this year’s Asian Cup. Their experience, history, and consistency are exceptional. We want our girls to improve by facing teams like them. These matches are a big opportunity for us,” she said.
