The stage is set for Bangladesh champions Bashundhara Kings as they kick off their AFC Challenge League campaign on Saturday in Kuwait. Placed in Group B, the Kings face a stern test against Oman’s Al Seeb, Lebanon’s Al Ansar, and hosts Kuwait SC.

The Kings will open their campaign on Saturday at 7:00pm Bangladesh time against Al Seeb Club, before facing Al Ansar on October 28 and concluding their group fixtures against tournament favourites Kuwait SC on October 31.

Despite the tough competition, there is quiet confidence within the Bangladeshi camp. With 10 national team players in the squad, Bashundhara Kings are aiming to make history by advancing past the group stage — something they have managed only once before, back in the Doha preliminaries when they beat Al Karamah of Syria.

Head coach Mario Gomez expressed belief in his team’s potential during the pre-match press conference on Friday.

“I think we have a chance because every game is different. The most important thing for us is the first step Saturday. We’ll play a strong team, but our team is strong too, and we are ready,” said Gomez.

Captain Topu Barman echoed his coach’s determination.

“We take this competition very seriously. We’ve trained together for a long time and prepared well. It’s very important for us, especially the first match. On Saturday, we go for the win,” said Topu.

The Kings boast a talented blend of experience and youth, with local stars Rakib Hossain, Fahim, Sohel Rana (Senior), and Saad Uddin — all of whom impressed recently for the Bangladesh national team against Hong Kong, China. Among the foreigners, Dorielton is in hot form, while Sunday Emmanuel remains a constant threat in attack. Cuban midfielder Mitchell could also prove influential if he finds his rhythm, whether starting or coming off the bench.

Defensive discipline will be crucial for the Kings, especially against teams with greater attacking depth. Their recent 1–0 win over Syria’s Al Karamah in the preliminary round — courtesy of Sunday Emmanuel’s strike — has boosted morale ahead of this major test.
