A Dhaka court on Thursday ordered a probe against 10 officials and employees of the July Shaheed Smriti Foundation on charges of attempted murder, assault, and torture in the name of questioning.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Hasibuzzaman directed the officer-in-charge of Shahbagh Police Station to investigate the allegations and submit a report after recording the plaintiff’s statement.
The accused include Senior Verification Officer Iftekhar Hossain, Executive Member Sabrina Afroz Shrabonti, Customer Service Officer Saidur Rahman Shahid, and officers Sagar, Afzalur Rahman Sayem, Sonia Akhter Lubna, Alif, Zahid, Fatema Afrin Payel, and Mehedi Hasan Prince.
According to the case documents, the victim, July fighter Md Jahangir, was shot by police and ruling-party assailants at Kanchpur Bridge on 18 July 2024 during the anti-discrimination student movement.
On 27 May this year, Jahangir visited the July Foundation office and submitted documents for financial assistance. The accused then allegedly took him to a dark room and asked how he had been injured.
When he replied that he had been shot by police and ruling-party attackers during the protest, they began beating him indiscriminately. Accused Saidur Rahman Shahid allegedly struck him repeatedly on the head with a GI pipe, causing him to lose consciousness.
Jahangir claimed that when he regained consciousness, the accused again assaulted him and pressured him to admit that he was a “fake July fighter.” They also allegedly snatched his mobile phone and continued beating him.
At one stage, the attackers allegedly injected something into his right hand and left him unconscious on the street. Jahangir later received medical treatment and subsequently filed the case.
Earlier, on 14 October, another case was filed against 13 individuals, including 10 members of the July Smriti Foundation, on allegations of torture in the name of interrogation over fake enlistment as “July freedom fighters.”
The victim's wife Sabina Yasmin filed that case with Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jewel Rana’s court. The court then ordered the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to investigate the matter and submit a report by 11 November.
Sabina alleged that the accused called them “fake July fighters,” tried to force them into false confessions, and snatched her bag and mobile phone. She said her husband became mentally traumatised as a result of the torture and has been undergoing long-term treatment.
