Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) Executive Director Dr Iftekharuzzaman said on Friday that the country’s political culture lacks tolerance – a core value of debate.
“Tolerance for differing opinions, compassion, respect for others’ views and rights, and mutual respect – along with countering disagreement through logic – are the true values of debate, which are almost absent in our political culture,” he said.
Dr Iftekharuzzaman made the remarks at the opening ceremony of the Inter-University Anti-Corruption Debate Competition 2025, organised by TIB at the CCDB Hope Centre in Savar.
He said, “Debate teaches us to be inspired by the values of honesty, justice, humanity, and the belief that all individuals are equal, regardless of race, religion, class, or profession. Alongside presenting one’s own opinions and arguments, having the patience and mindset to listen to others and to express one’s views rationally are recognised values of debate. Unfortunately, our society, state, and political sphere suffer from a stark deficiency of these fundamental principles. To ensure good governance and move the country forward, the young generation must continue to uphold and practise these values.”
He also called upon the young debaters to inspire and motivate others by embracing the spirit of anti-corruption. Dr Iftekharuzzaman further emphasised that debate is not about victory or defeat; it is a platform that sharpens rational thinking and contributes to building knowledge and understanding across national, social, and global spheres.
