Bangladesh missed chances and failed with multiple reviews as Ireland added 112 runs for two wickets to reach 198-7 at lunch on the fourth day of the first Test on Friday.

Andy McBrine anchored the innings with an unbeaten 52 off 104 balls, while debutant Jordan Neill was six not out. Ireland still trail by 103 runs and must avoid an innings defeat after being bowled out for 286 in their first innings.

Bangladesh’s spinners found turn but were unable to apply consistent pressure. Hasan Murad made the key breakthrough when he trapped Ireland captain Andy Balbirnie lbw for 34, ending a 66-run stand with McBrine.

Balbirnie earlier survived a close lbw review against Mehidy Hasan Miraz, while McBrine overturned two decisions in the space of two balls. Bangladesh also dropped a straightforward catch at silly point after a successful review against Matthew Humphreys.

Taijul Islam dismissed Humphreys for 19 with a top-edged slog sweep to backward square leg.

Bangladesh declared their first innings on 587-8, led by centuries from Mahmudul Hasan Joy and Najmul Hossain Shanto.
