Underrated spinner Elias Sunny calmly belted a match-winning knock as Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club catapulted a nail-biting two-wicket triumph over highflying Prime Bank Cricket Club in the ongoing Walton Dhaka Premier League (DPL) 2016-17 season 10th round game on Thursday.

After round 10, Sk Jamal holding 5th place in the 12-team league table collecting 12 points with six wins and four losses.

The ex-national left arm spinner Sunny is best known for his exploits with the ball for Bangladesh. But yesterday he surprised everyone with his exploits with the bat (44 off 47 balls) as Dhanmondi-based Sheikh Jamal pulled off their sixth glory in their ongoing tournament at Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Prothisthan ground-4 in Savar.

Prime Bank managed a challenging 270 for nine in 50 overs after sent to bat first and looked on course to defend it after taking four wickets for 110 runs inside 19 over.

Ziaur Rahman and Sohag Gazi resurrected Jamal with a 79-run partnership for the fifth wicket, with Gazi going on score 54.

But all hell broke loose when the top five were given out and the lower order collapsed. Jamal were 201 for 7 at one stage.

Fortunately for the winners, the day was saved by Elias Sunny who scored a match winning 47-ball 44 while wicketkeeper Mahmudul Haque, the No.9 batted sensibly to ensure Jamal’s sixth win of the tournament with one ball remaining.

Elias Sunny who hit three fours and a six in his sensible knock, was awarded the player of the match.

Earlier, Prime Bank top-order batsmen showed better form with 1st and 3rd stands, but finally could not ripen their fruits due to poor batting demonstration in the lower order.

Skipper Mehedi Maruf and Zakir Hasan shared 94 in 18.5 overs in the opening stand. Abhimanyu Easwaran and Al-Amin shared another 94 runs, but in 16.4 overs in the 3rd stand. Maruf hit a half century of 61 off 68 balls, including five boundaries and two over boundaries, while Easwaran hammered another half century scoring 54 off 64 balls which witnessed two fours and two sixes.

Al-Amin (42 off 43b; 3x4; 1x6), Zakir Hasan (34 off 56b; 3x4; 1x6) and Asif Ahmed (31 off 30b; 1x4) were other top-scorers for the side that was sent in to bat first. Pace bowler Shahadat Hossain bagged two wickets for 43 runs in eight overs for the winners.

In the day's another match, Kalabagan Krira Chakra made the biggest upset in the Walton Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League forcing league leader Gazi Group Cricketers to taste the first defeat by huge 127 runs at the Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium in Fatullah on Thursday

Despite the day's maiden defeat after nine consecutive wins, Gazi Group Cricketers maintained the top in the league table with 18 points from 10 matches while Kalabagan KC improved their position in the league table securing six points from 10 encounters.

In the day's another match, Brothers Union Club registered the 4th victory in their 10th match of the Walton Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League outplaying Dhaka Mohammedan SC by 129 runs at BKSP ground-3 in Savar on Thursday.

Sent into bat first, national coloured opener Junaid Siddique scored a ton to guide the Gopibagh outfit Brothers Union for a moderate total of 276 runs for 8 in a reduced 49-over-a-side match.

Junaid Siddique hammered a century making 110 runs off 123 balls with eight hits to the fence and was adjudged man of the match.
